Current Initiatives

We have a number of initiatives currently underway through our various committees, and are always looking for input for other ideas surrounding the sustainable management and protection of the island. Use the Contact Us page to provide your comments, ideas and feedback!
Current initiatives:
Item 1: Rockfish Conservation Area project, jointly with the Galiano Conservancy Association, including the development and posting of "no hook and line fishing" signs on Valdes Island and Kendrick Island.
Item 2: Annual Bioblitz - biological inventories of the sensitive ecosystems on the island with professional biologists, nest box program, and marine surveys with data supporting the Salish Sea Biodiversity Network Project.
Item 3: Identify invasive species on Valdes Island and explore control options with the annual bioblitz.
Item 4: Fundraiser including silent auctions at the annual Bioblitz
Item 5: Annual newsletter
Item 6: Development and posting of "no hunting" signage close to cabins to increase safety of islanders
Item 7: Development of an island fire prevention and safety plan
Item 8: Collaboration with the provincial government regarding abandoned properties on Valdes Island
Item 9: Collaboration with Mosaic Forest Management related to fire safety and projects to maintain biodiversity
Item 10: Development of an island-specific risk assessment report related to freighter anchorage, transport of oil products, and spill response in the Salish Sea.
Item 11: Eelgrass bed monitoring with the Mayne Island Conservancy.
Item 12: Partners with Salish Sea Nearshore Habitat Recovery Project (SSNHRP)
