Spill Response Plan for Valdes Island

The Conservancy has been actively involved in the sharing of relevant information on the sensitive marine and terrestrial ecosystems of Valdes Island in support of the development of a site-specific spill response plan in the event of a major marine catastrophe. In collaboration with the Lyackson First Nation and the Western Canada Marine Response Corporation, this is an ongoing initiative that is finally seeing daylight!

To put the project in perspective, the Gulf of Georgia and the interisland waters are active marine transportation corridors. As the large vessel traffic, (tankers, ocean liners, freighters, deep sea ships, etc.) increases, particularly with the addition of the Kinder Morgan pipeline, the likelihood of a spill and the severity of the impacts are increasing dramatically.

Please contact the Valdes Island Conservancy if you have any questions or would like to get involved in this initiative.
